Covered California is the place where Californians can get brand-name health insurance under the Affordable Care Act (ACA or “Obamacare”). It’s the only place to get federal premium assistance to help you buy private insurance. This means you may qualify for a discount on private insurance, or get health insurance through the state’s Medi-Cal program. Either way, you’ll get great health coverage.
Starting in 2020, Californians get new financial assistance from the state, in addition to the financial assistance they may be eligible to receive from the federal government. Also, starting in 2020, California restored the original provision of the Affordable Care Act that requires consumers to get health insurance, apply for an exemption or pay a penalty.
You can sign up for 2021 coverage from November 1, 2020 through January 31, 2021. Individuals with special qualifying life events can enroll at any time of the year. Medi-Cal enrollment is also year-round.
